Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
