🔗 Share this article The Last of Us Director's Fresh Project That Looks Very Different But Builds On Familiar Concepts. The acclaimed co-director behind The Last of Us is making a new venture into game development. This inventive adventure, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it draws heavily from his previous work centered around dynamic AI partners. An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey Shown for the first time at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a narrative-driven exploration title. The game follows a seasoned spellcaster, a protagonist who challenges traditional video game heroics. This central concept stemmed from a desire to deconstruct what it means to be a protagonist. "What if you didn’t have combat prowess? Perhaps you are somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" mused the creative lead. "This felt deeply interesting to explore the essence of heroism. Being a hero means persevering against obstacles, but also encompasses selflessness and unwavering will." Evolving Past Companions: A New Level of AI Interaction Although this project appears distinct at first glance, its core innovation builds directly upon the character dynamics seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception flowed from a key thought: "Is it possible to design Ellie even more reactive and adaptive to the player?" The companion creature in the game isn’t an average NPC. Straley describes it as a learning entity which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. Initially, it explores with wonder, resulting in playful hijinks. Then, it moves into a mimicry phase. Finally, it observes and assimilates comprehending the world's rules. For example: When the partner witnesses Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it learns the motion but not the reason. Subsequently, it may start picking up various things and test fitting them, mimicking the behavior. Understanding comes when it stumbles upon solving a puzzle itself, forming an organic connection. Where Every Playthrough Differs This complex system seeks to generate a unique story for each player. The director emphasizes that Coven of the Chicken Foot will be a contemplative journey of exploration as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story. "Each effort to insert more hardcore story beats within this framework, the magic dissipated," he stated. "The true vitality of this relationship lies in the fact that you as a player are going to have unique moments and stories than I will." This focus on organic narrative born from interaction, the new title signifies both a continuation and a significant shift from Straley's legendary previous titles. The project is currently in development for PC platforms.
