The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Decry an ‘Egregious Wrong’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Prison Term.

The court decision of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Human rights organizations and international powers have labeled the security-related charges politically motivated.

International Outcry and Demands for Freedom

Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper declared that the two-decade sentence constitutes a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She described the trial as being driven by political motives pursuant to legislation aimed at quieting those who speak out against China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.

“This ruling illustrates how the vague and overly broad stipulations of Hong Kong’s security law are subject to interpretation in breach of global human rights commitments,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deplores” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.

Details of the Legal Proceedings

Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered pro-democracy newspaper, was detained following the enactment of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was passed by China's government following extended demonstrations backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was sentenced on charges including plotting to create inflammatory publications and colluding with overseas entities. The collusion allegations were brought under the controversial security law.

Personal Fears

The activist's child, Sebastien, expressed that his father fears dying alone separated from his loved ones. The legal team described him the “planet's most prominent political prisoner” in custody today.

Sebastien Lai said that while the outcome was foreseen, its announcement felt worse than imagined, yet it provided some “solace” that the judicial farce had concluded.

Political Repercussions

The sentencing has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. British leader Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case in talks with China's leader Xi Jinping earlier this year. Yet, visible progress on obtaining his liberty is uncertain.

Sebastien Lai queried the upside to a visa-free travel agreement between the UK and China, remarking it felt “somewhat insensitive.”

Government Reactions

On the other hand, the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee said the sentence manifested that “the rule of law is upheld.”

An official representing China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “mastermind” behind previous protests and asserted the legal case had been “justified and legal.” He called on foreign countries to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.

A Defining Moment

Press rights groups labeled Lai as a symbol of diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. The organization's director general stated it was a “somber occasion for those who value a free press.”

With a near 100% rate of guilty verdicts on national security offences, Lai’s severe sentence is regarded as the most severe yet delivered under the security statute.
