Although not quite at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.

“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life away from worry.”

The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.

A Future Secured

This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.

“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.

“It represents the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”

Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
