Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego Outside.

A single omission was enough. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, although it is also Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and player rankings necessary with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.

The manager desires the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about channeling it appropriately. Skill counts but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when celebrity dominates. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed England book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach mention appreciating the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have made his squad place precarious.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has made him realize that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support around the 22-year-old after showing that he is willing to make big calls.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham displays that aggression. You need a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. We all must help him and create a atmosphere where he can channel this edge in matches and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s meaningless matches versus Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, what about another talent? Here is a further gifted playmaker in need of coaching. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel could not ignore the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match versus the German side recently.

The issue, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to select Cole Palmer once he overcomes a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the optimal mix at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s style as a result.

It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it disrupts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. The coach wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this fantasy about him for years. In my view it matches his abilities best.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then obviously something is not right, be it the position, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is also so used to representing his club in a specific system, with a defined role. Believe he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and the other netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter assisting Kane to score in an international match versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“This is where at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. There is still a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be watching him closely. Set aside self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
